The vibrant capital of Chile is located in the fertile central valley by the foot of the great Andes Mountains in the east and the coastal range to the west (1½ hr to the coast). The river Mapocho is flowing through the city, from East to west, and one can cross it by the many bridges, which adds to the beautiful scenery of the city. Santiago is located in a fertile valley with pleasant Mediterranean climate, which has lead to the growing cosmopolitan and modern city, filled with life throughout the year. The city is located 100 km away from the seashore and from harbors such as Valparaiso. The city was founded in 1541 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia. The capital is therefore strongly influenced by impressive Spanish design and architecture. The capital is a combination of the old and new, traditional and modern, which makes it more interesting to explore.
